Sweet potato fries from a restaurant are usually crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. However, they are usually deep fried in oil, which makes them less healthy. While these sweet potato fries will never be that crispy, I still feel like they are pretty good. Plus, my family loves it when I make these fries–they still taste amazing. There are methods to make the fries crispy when baked, including soaking the cut slices in salted ice water and coating them with cornstarch before baking, but, honestly, I found that these methods didn’t make a huge difference. It is just fine to make the fries without soaking them, saving a step. The added cornstarch wasn’t hard, so I would still recommend doing that–it does add a little more crunch. Either way, feel free to experiment with different spices for fun flavors. Enjoy these at your next meal!
How to Make Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Equipment Needed:
Glass bowl
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet fitted with a silicone mat.
Peel the sweet potatoes then slice in ¼ inch strips. Place in a large bowl. Add the avocado oil and stir to coat each slice. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the potatoes and lightly stir to coat all of them.

Place the sweet potatoes onto the baking sheet and spread out the potatoes to allow for even baking.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper for a simple flavor. Sprinkle with other spices such as garlic powder, curry powder, paprika, or chili powder if desired.
Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Check sweet potatoes to see if they are soft in the middle. If more time is needed, bake for 5-10 more minutes. Sweet potatoes will be soft in the middle and slightly crunchy on the outside.

For a more crispy fry, use an air fryer and cook in batches according to the air fryer directions. For my college kids and nieces and nephews in apartments–the air fryer is the way to go!!
If using the salted ice water soak, soak for at least 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes and pat dry. Then add the oil, cornstarch, and spices as noted above. Bake as noted above.

Note
Feel free to skip the step of soaking the sweet potatoes in salted ice water. This step doesn't make a huge difference--I found that they were still crunchy with just the cornstarch added. It will save time in the process.
Feel free to play around with spices to your liking. You can make it sweet or savory.
